Year 5

WEEKLY ROUND UP - Friday 7th February 25

Another positive week of learning.

In maths we have been working on place value of decimals as well as converting decimals into fractions and vice versa.

In PE we have been working on incorporating different turns and jumps into a sequence.

'I had fun working with my partner and discussing how to use different jumps and turns to make them into a sequence.' Emilia

'We used CANON in our sequencing. CANON is when you perform the same movement one after another.' Chantelle

'We used UNISON in our sequence. UNISON is when you perform the same movement at the same time.' Carrie

In Geography we enjoyed learning about the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Can YOU name all seven? Answers will be given next week.

Here are 7 clues to help you.

1. T,M

2. C,R

3. P

4. M,P

5. C,I

6. T,C

7. T,G,W,C

We have also been learning about Human and Physical Geography.

'I now know that Human Geography is all human activity and things that are man made.  For example towns and cities.' Alisa

'Physical Geography is looking things that are natural eg., landscapes and weather.' Nelicia

Next week is our last week of learning before half term.

WEEKLY ROUND UP - Friday 31st January 2025

This week we have continued to improve and develop our skills in reasoning in maths.

In English we have finished reading the book How to Live Forever. We enjoyed discussing the book and then wrote a summary of the main events from the book.

'I enjoyed finishing the book and finding out what actually happens in the end. We had to really think about what parts of the story to include in our summary.' Lili

'I liked listening to the story because it made me think about whether it is a good idea to live forever.' Osabo

In PE Year 5 are continuing with gymnastics and have moved on to jumping from various heights in different ways eg., straddle jump into a forward roll.

'I enjoyed the session, I found it easier to jump and straddle from a height rather than from the ground.' Shazara aka Professor๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

'I am proud of myself because I improved my technique during the session (straight arms and legs out to the side).' Deborah

In Geography we have been learning about the difference between a continent, country, state and city. We have used maps and atlases to locate North and South America and the different countries that make up the continents. We also researched the similarities and differences between a country in North America and London.

'I have learnt that continents are the largest land masses on Earth and they are split into countries apart from Australia because it is both a continent and a country.' Joe

'I now know that Brazil, Chile and Argentina are some of the countries that make up South America.' Elliott

'I have learnt that Canada, United States of America and Mexico are some of the  countries that make up North America.' Layla

Next week even more learning to be had!!!!!๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

GYMNASTICS.2

ENGLISH - HOW TO LIVE FOREVER/THE ANCIENT CHILD

WEEKLY ROUND UP - Friday 24th January 25

Another great week of learning.

In English this week we have been discussing and writing our own opinions on

1. WHY PEOPLE WOULD WANT TO LIVE FOREVER?

2. SHOULD ALL THINGS LOST BE FOUND? (What do you think?)

'I think in Number 2 the answer could be yes or no because it depends on what it is. If it's a book called HOW TO CURE WORLD HUNGER and it's found and put to good use that's ok but if it's a bad book then it should stay lost  forever or burnt then no one can use it for anything bad.' Lucca๐Ÿ˜„

This week in PE we were working on how to jump and land safely from different heights.

'I enjoyed the session because at first my back wasn't straight and I kept looking down but by the end of the session I was jumping, using my arms and keeping my back straight.' Osabo

'I improved my skills in jumping, learning to start with a straight back, use my arms to help me take off and land with bent knees. I am proud of my progress.' Emilia๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

'As I jumped starting from different heights my technique got better and better.' Divine๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

We have started a new topic in Geography - THE AMERICAS - more to follow.๐ŸŒ

Today in RRS we discussed:-

Article 23 (children with disability)

A child with a disability has the right to live a full life and a decent life in conditions that promote dignity, independence and an active role in the community. Governments must do all they can to provide free care and assistance to children with disability.

'I think that all children with disabilities should have free assistance and healthcare globally so they can achieve their full potential just like any other child.' Shazara

Next week more learning to do.๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜ƒ

MATHS WORK

GROUP DISCUSSIONS IN ENGLISH

SINGING/RRS

GYMNASTICS - JUMPING & LANDING FROM DIFFERENT HEIGHTS CORRECTLY.

WEEKLY ROUND UP - FRIDAY 17TH JANUARY 2025

A great start to Term 3.

In maths Year 5 have been working on multiplying fractions with different denominators (mixed and improper fractions).

In English we started reading a new book called HOW TO LIVE FOREVER by Colin Thompson, our work will be based around this.

'I enjoyed having to predict what might happen next in the story. It was fun and interesting.' Carrie

In small groups the class had to discuss the meaning of the word FOREVER and visualise what it looks like.

'I think the word forever means eternity and never ending.' Lili

'I think it looks like when you are standing on a path and you cannot see the end of it. It looks like it goes on and on and on.' Hikmat

'I think it looks like you are walking but you're not getting anywhere. Everything around you seems to be moving but you are not.' Cyprian

'I think it looks like a clock and the hands keep moving round and round, they never stop and all you can hear is a constant ticking.' Paul

On Wednesday we went to the library.

'My book is called Zo and the Forest of Secrets. The front cover is green and after reading the blurb I wanted to find out what happens.' Maureen

'I enjoy reading books from The Marcus Rashford Book Club. The one I am reading now is called  BREAKFAST CLUB ADVENTURES,  The Beast beyond the fence. I can't wait to see what happens.' Divine

'The librarian was really helpful she helped me find a book I really wanted called 'Leila and the Blue Fox. I'm enjoying the book so far.' Layla

Today we have discussed Article 22 (refugee children)

If a child is a refugee or seeking refuge, governments must ensure that they have the same rights as any other child. Governments must help in trying to reunite child refugees with their parents. Where this not possible the child should be given protection.

'A refugee is someone who flees from their country to another country because of war or natural disaster. Every child has the right to be safe.' Alisa

'I agree if a child refugee flees to a different country they should have the same rights as any other child and not be discriminated against.' Maisie

Next week the learning continues!!!!

WELL DONE TO SAHAJ AND ALISA YEAR 5 MASTER OF TABLES COMPETITION WINNERS DECEMBER 24๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

WEEKLY ROUND UP - Friday 6th December 24

Another great week of learning. In Maths Year 5 are continuing to work on and embed knowledge and skills in fractions.

In English we have been developing and improving the skills we need to read and answer questions in comprehension.

'This is what I learnt after reading the comprehension. It was Henry VIII who founded the Royal Mail, it was originally called the King's Post.  In 1635 it was opened for the public.' Carolina

'I learnt that Elizabeth I cared about the poor and created laws to help them.' Joe

Year 5 have really enjoyed making Christmas Parcels as part our school's Christmas decorations.

'I liked making the Christmas Parcels because we made 3d cubes first and then we had to think about how we were going to decorate them. I used stars, reindeers and circles.' Osabo

'I used reindeers, foiled stars and flowers. I used the stars because in the Christmas Story, the wise men followed a star to find the baby Jesus.' Charis

In science we have been learning about how we have day and night, the different phases of the moon and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky using the idea of the Earth's rotation.

'I learnt that the moon reflects light from the sun and the amount of the moon that we see each night depends on the amount of sunlight that is being reflected. These are called phases.' Maureen and Andrew

'I now know how we have day and night. The earth rotates on its axis, the side that is facing the sun receives light (daylight) and the side facing away from the sun is in darkness (night).' Carrie

Next week even more learning and taking part in the Northwood Christmas Singalong.

FRIDAY ROUND UP - Friday 29th November 24

Another positive week of learning.

In English Year 5 have enjoyed using descriptive language in our writing (story starters based on a picture).

In science we have been learning about Aristotle a Greek Philosopher who proved the earth is round.

'The first piece of evidence he found was that when you  watch a ship sail towards the horizon, the hull (the bottom of the ship) disappears first then the middle part and then the top part. If the world was flat you would see the ship getting smaller and smaller until it becomes a tiny dot.' Nelicia

'Another piece of evidence he found was if you looked up at the night sky you would always see the same constellation (group of stars) if the world was flat. He noticed that when you look up at the night sky from different locations the constellations are not the same, this proved the earth is curved.' Deborah

'The third piece of evidence is when there was an eclipse of the moon by the earth, the earth's shadow was curved. This again proved that the earth is round and not flat.' Lucca

In PE we have finally finished our Battle of Bosworth Dance - this showed how the children built up their movements and sequencing (using music) as a way of telling the story of what happened between the The House of Lancaster and the House of York including the crowing of Henry Tudor aka Henry VII.

'I enjoyed using very slow movements using music to show action taking place.' Akram

'I liked how we had to use facial expressions to show how we were feeling and that we were ready to for battle.' Alisa

In RHED we enjoyed discussing the importance of RULES and how it all started with the MAGNA CARTA.

'I learnt that rules are a big part of everyone's lives and without them lots of things would be unfair.' Emilia

Next week we look forward to more learning including Christmas!!!!๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ„

RHED - DISCUSSING THE IMPORTANCE OF RULES

WELL DONE TO MACIE FOR ACHIEVING THE SPORTS CHAMPION AWARD IN KS2

Friday 22nd November 24 - WEEKLY ROUND UP

We have had another brilliant week. On Monday we enjoyed singing Viking songs. These songs told the stories of Viking Gods.  In maths we are learning how to order and compare fractions.

We have enjoyed writing a diary entry in first person (Henry Tudor) as part of our history topic.

We have also started our topic in Science - Earth and Space (more information to come next week).

In Computing Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed using Micro:bits. They had to use coding and instruct them to perform and change their actions.

'I really enjoyed using the Micro:bits. I was able to make a flashing heart and instruct it to display my name. I found it easy to understand and following the instructions. I would like to have a go at this again.' Carrie

'I was able to instruct the Micro:bit to spell out my name. I also coded an icon onto it that looked like a spaceship. I really liked the session and hope I can do it again some time.' Andrew

'I enjoyed using the Micro:bit to spell my name and used code to create a tower.' Paul

Our school has been involved in designing a playground and totem poles courtesy of Peabody. We designed the totem poles because there is a hill that was blocking the view to the park. We were asked what type of play equipment we would like in the play space.

All the children have been given their own bookmark with their designs on them.๐Ÿค—

Yesterday the whole school were able to have their photos taken beside the totem poles and Year 4 had the opportunity to actually go and have a play in the new park.

It was a very PROUD moment for our school because once again we have shown how we can share ideas and make a difference - a positive one - to our community and our local environment .๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

'I really enjoyed this moment because we were chosen to take part in this project. I really liked designing the totem poles.  It was nice to see the totem poles in real life with our designs on them.' Lucca

'I liked being able to vote on what design we wanted in the playground. I can't wait to go and visit the park.' Elliott

'I enjoyed seeing the totem poles. It was a lovely surprise to see our designs on display. I look forward to visiting the park.' Shazara

When we got back to school all the classes had the opportunity to do some planting in our Wellbeing Garden and around the school.  Year 5 planted a pear tree, daffodils, tulips and rhubarb.

'I enjoyed helping to plant the pear tree. It was fun but cold and we had to dig quite deep in order to fit the tree in.' Emilia๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ

'My group planted daffodils and tulips. I really enjoyed it and cannot wait to see what they will look like next year.' Divine ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒน

What a great week it has been. Next week even more learning.๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“š

WEEKLY ROUND UP - Friday 15th November 24

We have had a fantastic week!๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

In maths we have continued to improve our skills in division.

'I thought it was difficult at first but after it was modelled to me I became more confident.' Aidan

On Tuesday we had a visitor from the London Fire Brigade. (Fire Safety)

'I learnt that you should not charge your devices overnight because they can get hot which could cause a fire.' Maisie

'I learnt that you should ALWAYS CHECK that your fire alarm is working because if there is ever a fire in your home it might not be able to detect it.' Carolina

'You should never put a tea light on plastic or flammable surfaces because they can get very hot and start a fire. You should put them in a candle holder or something that is heat resistant to be safe.' Lucca

'I learnt that you should always turn off your gas when you are cooking before answering the front door.' Lisa

'I learnt that cigarettes should be put into an ashtray with a little bit of water to make sure they have been put out.' Shazara

'I now know that if you live in a flat and there is a fire you should put something like a blanket or towel up against the door to stop the smoke getting in.' Andrew

'I learned that should never put a fire out yourself, you should always ring 999 for help.' Macie

On Wednesday we did dance in PE based on our topic The Battle of Bosworth. The class had to perform part of a battle sequence to a piece of music.

'We practised different movements and sequences and then the music was added later. It made it more effective and dramatic.' Carrie

'I enjoyed discussing different movements and how we were going to sequence them with my partner.' Divine

Yesterday in RHED we discussed being part of a school community and how each one of us can be a positive and active citizen within our school.

'I enjoyed the discussion and how we can have a positive impact on our environment and others.' Osabo

Next week even more learning!!!๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

Welcome back to Term 2. Year 5 are looking forwards to increasing their skills and knowledge in their learning.

Here are some of the topics we will be learning this term:

History - Tudors Part 1 (The Battle of Bosworth)๐Ÿ“š

Science - Earth and Space๐ŸŒ

RE - If God is everywhere why go to a place of worship?๐ŸŒˆ

We have had a great start to the week. Yesterday we took part in a workshop (GAV= Growing Against Violence)

'I learnt that some apps like YouTube, Facebook and TikTok etc have certain age restrictions and some children lie about their age to get onto those apps. The age restrictions are there so that children do not have access to inappropriate content.' Carrie๐Ÿ˜‰

'I now know that the actual age for apps like Facebook etc is 13 years and above.' Lucca๐Ÿ˜ƒ

'I learnt that it is NOT GOOD to always be on your devices because this can cause an addiction and affect your sleep, your body needs sleep to recharge itself.' Andrew๐Ÿ˜Š

'You should NEVER SPEAK TO STRANGERS ONLINE because they could be lying about their age and are trying to make you do bad things.! You should tell your parents ASAP!!' Maisie๐Ÿ˜

The children were set a challenge.

- Talk to their parents about what apps they used.

- Turn their devices off for one hour.

'I switched off my laptop for one hour and read a book. I didn't miss using my device. I enjoyed it so much I think I will do it again.' Osabo๐Ÿ˜

'I showed my Dad what I was watching on YouTube and we had a discussion about it (crafting).  I also switched my device off for an hour and went to the park with my sisters. I would like to do this again.' Charis๐Ÿ˜

'I switched off my device and did some drawing with my brother. We had a good time talking about what we were drawing.' Macie๐Ÿ˜ƒ

'I did some drawing and colouring in with my sister (who is always glued to the screen). It was fun.' Layla๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Well done to those children who took part in the challenge.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

Half term has finally arrived I cannot believe how quick this first term has flown by.

I hope you all have a lovely week off.๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

WEEKLY ROUND UP - Friday 18th October 24

ASSESSMENT WEEK๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ“š

(A poem to make you smile)๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

Yesterday I took a test.

I got a perfect score.

A perfect score is something

that I’ve never had before.

My teacher nearly fainted.

My parents were impressed

to think that I knew every single answer on the test.

But that’s not how I did it.

No, it was only luck.

I guessed on every answer;

not just ones where I was stuck.

I guess it was my lucky day.

I feel like such a fool.

I should have played the lottery.

Instead I went to school!

written by Kenn Nesbit

Yesterday we delivered all of the food donations to our local food bank. They were extremely impressed and happy with the amount of donations they received.

'I feel really happy that Northwood have played a part in providing support to so many vulnerable people within our local community.' Miss Hewitt๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก

'I feel very pleased because people donated so much food to help others who need it.' Macie๐Ÿ’›

'I feel happy because people are getting food that they can't afford to buy  themselves.' Elliott๐Ÿ’š

'I feel very happy for those people who are struggling to buy food because now with our donations they are able to have something to eat.' Lucca๐Ÿงก

'I feel really proud of the Northwood children who were able to collect so much food in order to help their local community.' Mrs Martin๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š

A few children has the opportunity to take part in a Cross Country Running Competition.

'I had fun representing my school for the competition. I have never done this type of running before and I didn't realise how long the course was.' Deborah๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿฝ‍โ™€๏ธ

'I enjoyed taking part in the race, I felt tired and my legs were aching but I did finish the course.' Divine๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿฝ‍โ™‚๏ธ

Today we discussed Article 15 (freedom of association)

Every child has the right to meet with other children and young people and to join groups and organisations, as long as this does not stop other people from enjoying their rights.

'This right is important because some people may have friends who are mean to them or try to persuade them to do something they don't want to do and this right may encourage them to tell an adult how they are feeling.' Maisie

'I agree with this right because children should be allowed to meet up with friends as long as they are all respectful to each other and feel safe.' Andrew

Next week is our last week before half term......lots more learning to do.๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜Š

Article 14 (Freedom of thought, belief and religion)

Every child has the right to think and believe what they want and also practise their religion, as long as they are not stopping other people from enjoying their rights. Governments must respect the rights of parents to give their children guidance about this right.

'I agree with this article. People should be allowed to practise their religion without being stopped or judged by others.' Carrie๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

Another week of great learning. On Monday Year 5 worked with a PE Specialist and took part in a Mindfulness session. During the session they had to listen and respond to 2 pieces of music (Fairytale by Ludovico Einaudi and West Africa by Afrobeats)

'I liked this session because we had to listen to a piece of music and starting off with a straight line, draw how it made us feel. I drew wavy lines for my music.' Osabo

'I enjoyed the second piece of music. We had to draw a line to show how the music made us feel and then use our bodies to copy the line we drew. The music made me feel energetic.'  Carrie

'I enjoyed the first piece of music because it made me feel calm and peaceful.' Lily

'I enjoyed the whole session, one of the things we did was to use our fingers as an imaginary pen and draw the music in the air.' Akram

WEEKLY ROUND UP - Friday 27th September 24

Another great week of learning. In maths we are continuing to embed our knowledge of the four basic operations.

We have now started a new topic in Geography (RIVERS)

'I have learnt that the Thames Barrier took 8 years to build. It was built to stop London from flooding.' Maisie

'Source means the beginning of a river.' Jack

'I now know that the word meander means a bend or curve in a river.' Carrie

'The mouth of the River Thames flows into the North Sea.' Cavalli

'The length of the River Thames is approximately 360 miles.' Deborah

'Some parts of the River Thames can be up to 8.6 m deep.' Lucca

We have lots of fun improving our skills in PE.

'I enjoyed working as part of team using hand and eye co ordination to achieve our goal.' Nelicia

'I got better at moving my body quickly to avoid getting caught out.' Lili

This week we discussed Article 13 (freedom of expression)

Every child must be free to say what they think and to seek and receive information of any kind as long as it is within the law.

'Children should be able to say what they think and not worry about reactions from adults.' Emilia

'Children should be able to talk about what they want, their thoughts and feelings without being judged.' Shazara

Next week even more learning!!!!!๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰

WEEKLY ROUNDUP - Friday 20th September 24

Another positive week of learning. Year 5 continue to consolidate their skills in maths (reasoning using addition and subtraction.)

In science we have discussed and investigated the process of filtering, sieving and evaporation.

'I have learnt that a solute and a solvent when mixed together creates a solution eg the solute can be salt and the solvent which is a liquid can be water. When they are mixed together they create a solution. To get the salt back to its natural state you have to heat the solution so that the liquid will evaporate and you will be left with salt crystals.' Carrie

'If you make a solution with tea leaves and water you can separate them by filtering. The tea leaves stay in the filter paper and the water drips through the filter paper.' Cyprian

'If you sieve a solution of water and sand, the sand will be left in the sieve and the water will pass straight through.' Maisie

'You can also use the same process of evaporation sugar and water - the water will evaporate and we are left with sugar crystals. Sahaj

Today we discussed Article 10, Family Reunification.

Governments must respond quickly and sympathetically if a child or their parents apply to live together in the same country. If a child's parents live apart in a different country, the child has the right to visit both of them.

'If we did not have this right the government would not have to make much effort to reunite the child/children with their parents.' Hikmat

'If it was me and my parents were separated and the article didn't exist I would be sad because my family would not be able to be reunited.' Carolina

WEEKLY ROUND UP - Friday 13th September 24

We have had a positive week of learning. In maths we have been improving our skills in Addition and Subtraction using numbers up to six digits.

'At first I found subtracting numbers with zeros in it a bit difficult but after lots practise I now feel more confident.' Cyprian๐Ÿ˜Š

'I enjoyed maths and now feel confident in adding and subtraction.' Charis๐Ÿ˜Š

'I enjoyed doing six digit numbers in maths and it was tricky at first because of how many digits there were but after a while it was not too hard and I feel happy about it now.' Maisie๐Ÿ˜‰

On Wednesday Year 5 took part in a fitness circuit during their PE session.

'I enjoyed the session because of the amount of activities we did. My favourite was sprinting because I had to use a big burst of energy and improve my stopping skills.' Jack๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿฝ‍โ™‚๏ธ

'I enjoyed doing fitness in PE because it inspired me to exercise more at home.' Emilia๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿฝ‍โ™€๏ธ

'I enjoyed the sessions because when I looked at the different stations I thought all of them looked easy but every single time that I did one, it tired me out in seconds! It made me realise how unfit I am so I need to exercise more.' Cavalli๐Ÿคจ๐Ÿค”

Year 5 are enjoying their science topic - Materials and their Properties.

'I have learnt that the reversible means when you change something into a different state and you can change it back to its original state. Irreversible means when you change something into a different state but it is impossible to change it back.' Chantelle๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜€

'I found it interesting when we had to sort different materials into two groups irreversible and reversible. I enjoyed discussing where they should go and why.' Carolina๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜€

'This week in our science topic I enjoyed learning about the words reversible and irreversible. I also learnt some other words eg., the word boiling is when you heat something up to 100 degrees celsius, condensation is when a liquid turns into a gas and finally solidifying is when a liquid turns into a solid.' Andrew๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

Today in Rights Respecting we have been discussing Article 7.

Article7 (registration, name, nationality, care)

Every child has the right to a legally registered name and nationality, as well as the right to know and, as far possible, to be cared for by their parents.

'I think that it is important that you are registered at birth because if you are not registered at birth it is like you don't exist and it will be hard for you to go to school.' Lilli๐Ÿ™‚

'I enjoyed discussing the article with my partner because we were able to share our thoughts on registering children at birth so they have a name and the importance of having a nationality.' Nelicia๐Ÿ˜‰

Next week we look forward to even more learning!!!๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“š
