In Year 3 we used* the Allan Ahlberg poem "Talk us through it, Charlotte" to prompt writing about and commentating on a football match. To add interest and excitement we recorded part of a Premiershp match. Children listened to part of the commentary to model their commentary. Then they watched a goal being scored and celebrated and wrote their own commentary. Some children were given a chance to perform their commentary to the video of the goal.

"Joe Cole boots it to Ronaldino. A pass from Ronaldino to Henrie. Henrie shoots. What a goal!! In the second half and 13 minutes to go. The crowd goes wild! Sadly he gets a yellow card for taking his top off. It was a good goal by Henrie though."
