What Governors Do

Welcome to the area of the website that introduces our governors, and the work that we do with the school. We have also included the minutes from our meetings, along with the termly report the Head Teacher writes for governors.

Our main role is to provide support to the Head Teacher and the staff, and we are often known as the school’s ‘critical friend’. At the start of each year, the governing body sets the targets for the school and we monitor the progress of all the children in the school, to ensure that they are all doing well towards being the very best that they can.

Our statutory duties include:

  • Setting the vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Providing both support and challenge to the headteacher;
  • Monitoring and evaluating the progress of all the children in the school;
  • Ensuring that the school budget is set and that the very best use is made of the money available; and
  • Making sure that the school is a safe environment for the children and that all the requirements relating to safeguarding are fulfilled.

We have recently made changes to the way our governing body works and our intention is that we will meet at least once each term, with an extra meeting at the start of the autumn term, to review how we did as a governing body in the last year and to set out our targets for the new year and how we will work with the school to ensure they are achieved.

Because there is such an importance on seeing how the children are progressing, the Governing body regularly examine and analyse assessment data to monitor how the children are doing.

Our resources committee meet each half term to discuss matters relating to finance and staffing.

"I became a governor at Northwood School in March 2015.  I have lived locally for thirty years and I run my own nationwide business.  I am very experienced in Health and Safety and for that reason I am the governor with special interest in the health and safety of the children at Northwood School.  Every half-term I carry out a Health and Safety walk with the Site Manager, Mr Toker, to ensure that the school's policies are being adhered to and that everything possible is being done to ensure children at Northwood are safe.  Running my business, I understand the importance of keeping a close eye on finance and use my experience when reviewing how the school uses the money it is given, ensuring best value on expenditure."

"I have been on the governing body of Northwood School for many years.  When the governing body reconstituted in March 2015, I restarted my term of office.  I work locally in a children’s centre and am very experienced in pre-school and Early Years education.  This year, to support a whole school priority, I started a letter writing project with Year 1 and am now their pen friend.  We have been writing to each other regularly throughout the year.  I also come into school to visit Year 1 and Class R and work with them in their classroom.  I am the governor with special interest in S.E.N. and safeguarding.  I meet regularly with the SENCO to look at data and to ensure that all children are making progress from their starting points.  With regards to safeguarding, I meet regularly with the HT and designated teacher making sure that policies are appropriate, in line with current statutory guidelines and that they are in action."

"I joined Northwood’s governing body at the beginning of 2016.  My background is working in financial institutions and I bring a strong strategic perspective to the school. Since I joined, I have gained a lot of knowledge around school governance and believe that I have brought an increased forensic analytical approach to school performance.  I am delighted to have a special interest in the Reception year and meet with Miss Mitchell to discuss progress and to ensure she has the resources needed to do the best for our children".

I have been a parent governor at Northwood since April 2016.  I have two children at the school.  I also attended Northwood myself as a pupil and wanted to provide support to the governing body.  My passion is reading and last year I was the governor with a special interest in literacy, visiting the school and speaking to teachers to find out how the school supports a love of reading for the children.

In my private life I read and review books that I am sent by publishing houses that are subsequently posted on my blog.  I’m very passionate about getting children to become keen readers and couldn't be prouder that I've passed that onto both of my children.  I'm delighted that I am able to use my passion for reading to help the children in our school.

"I am a newly appointed Governor, and my special focus will be on further development  of the writing skills, spelling, punctuation and grammar of the children at Northwood.  This is close to my heart because my father struggled with writing throughout his life, but showed me that with hard work and dedication we can all succeed.  I am very privileged to work with older students in my day job as Vice Principal of a local college, and I hope this adds a fresh viewpoint to the excellent team of Governors I have joined."
