Florence Nightingale arrived in Turkey with 38 nurses. The doctors at first refused Florence's help. As the doctors had to deal with more and more injured soldiers they soon urgently requested their help. The hospital was dirty and many soldiers died of disease not from battle. Florence made sure that the wards were clean and that patients were washed and kept clean. She hardly rested and would walk the wards at night with a lamp making sure that everyone was being cared for. She became known as the "Lady of the lamp."
